Historic Porter Hotel opened with 54 guest rooms and 3 apartments in 1939. Built by W. Earl Porter who was a partner in J.C. Penney, the hotel featured the first elevator in Beloit. The steel and concrete building was considered among the finest between Kansas City and Denver. Iconic big bands including Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey played and stayed here. The hotel coffee shop was featured in the 1958 edition of Adventures In Good Eating by food critic Duncan Hines.
In 1989, the guest rooms were transformed to apartments and in 2004 the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the Porter House is home to residents of all ages and incomes. The building includes 27 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments of which 3 are ADA accessible. Amenities include an exercise room, elevator, laundry facilities, a private garden and the inimitable presence of GM Kevin Mickey who is regarded far and wide as the premier host of weekly coffee hours, pot luck dinners and his famed Christmas Brunch.
Porter House is more than an address. It is home to vibrant and vital residents who favor Beloit-living over all other options.
